Definition of Stress | Secrets to Overcoming Stress – Part 1
Stress is a perennial problem in our society. A story goes like this! A man met Death walking pass by him and he questioned his whereabouts. Death replied that he was busy today and was going on his work to take away the lives of 10000 people. He bid his goodbye. The next day, the man read the newspaper but was shocked to see deaths of nearly 30000. The man was furious now. The next day he met Death again walking pass by him and furiously questioned him about why he had lied to him. Death replied, “Calm down my friend. I didn’t lie to you, as said to you, I took away 10000 lives last night, but worry killed the rest.”
Stress has many factors that contribute to it – worry, anxiety, fear, insecurity, unworthiness and so on…the list is exhaustive. If we are not taught on how to handle Stress, it can wreck our life causing serious fallouts. I have searched all over the web and other sources that can help alleviate Stress, but haven’t found a single article that can provide a complete description on the solution. There are topics covered here and there. However, I will try to stretch a little further than any article covered outside.
A closer definition I have found goes like this, “Stress may be defined as that gap between the demands placed upon us and our ability to meet those demands.” When stress attacks a person, he is emotionally fatigued, physically drained and spiritually weak or not at his best. However, there is good news! We need not crumble under stress if we only know how to deal with it in the way it should.
The enemy loves to take its victim down at his lowest point:
“Remember what Amalek did to you on the way as you were coming out of Egypt, how he met you on the way and attacked your rear ranks, all the stragglers at your rear, when you were tired and weary; and he did not fear God. (Deuteronomy 25:17-18 NKJV)
Scores of suicides, murders, mishaps, accidents, violence etc have taken place because people were not able to handle a moment which went awry. At that moment, they went mad, weren’t able to control, were not in their senses, couldn’t take it any more…Alas! If only they knew what they were dealing with, they wouldn’t have succumbed victims, thousands of lives could have been saved.
I sorrowed deeply when I heard about this boy being scolded by his father regarding his Job. He couldn’t take that correction. He went to his room upstairs and hanged himself but providence had its way. His sister ran to his rescue and brought him down before the end came. In the process, the boys vocal chords were squeezed beyond repair, a nerve that went to his brain got damaged. Today he lies incapable, paralyzed and is bed ridden. This is only one such story but there are scores like this whom Stress at a unfortunate moment has devoured. If only they knew the answer, the way to deal with it!
